Superintendent David Corona
Welcome to West Baton Rouge Parish Schools! It’s the end of the summer of 2011 and once again we had another quality academic school year. April 2011 testing, brought a continuance of quality results to our district. While the results were similar to our 2010 results, they were nonetheless, quality results. Were they good enough? They will never be good enough unless every child reaches his or her maximum potential on every measure. We will always be striving to be better……..always!
We know that early intervention is a huge key to academic success, particularly with at risk children, and we know that reading is the gateway to all learning. We now have 3 year olds in our system for the third successive year as a result of being the Head Start grantee for West Baton Rouge Parish. We start early with appropriate learning and intervention. This will lead to more academic success for more students and will increase our student academic outcomes. The result? An improved quality of life in West Baton Rouge Parish!
Our teachers, administrators and support staff, (virtually everyone in our system) keep a constant focus on excellence and high expectations for our students. We aren’t where we want to be yet, but we are making great strides in getting there. While we rely heavily on data to provide the focus for what students need to know next, we also rely heavily on our outstanding teachers to design and create appropriate lessons that are of interest to our students, and capture the different intelligences that our students bring to school.
The West Baton Rouge Parish community supports our school system as was noted by a 68% “YES” vote in May, 2007, which provided a $5000 raise for our teachers through a 12 mill property tax. A starting teacher in our parish with a Bachelor’s degree and 0 years of experience will earn a salary of approximately $42,000 in the 2011-12 school year. In addition, our employees are well respected by the citizens in our communities.
Our system is comprised of ten schools. We have five elementary schools; Port Allen Elementary (Head Start, Pre K, through 1), Cohn Elementary (2 through 4), Chamberlin Elementary (Head Start, Pre K through 4), Brusly Elementary (Head Start, Pre K through 2), and Lukeville Upper Elementary (3 through 5). We have three middle schools; Port Allen Middle (5-8), Devall Middle (5-8), and Brusly Middle (6-8), and two high schools; Port Allen High (9-12) and Brusly High (9-12). During the 2010-11 school year, we served approximately 3800 students. Links are available on our website that will enable you to view the report cards for each of our schools.
The entire instructional program in our district is continually evolving to meet the challenges of today's society, and, as such, technology is woven throughout the curriculum, and our system in total. Promethean Boards abound in every school that are used by well trained teachers. Continuous technology training for teachers and the community at large is taking place. We will continue to enhance our use of technology, and we are confident that it will be a driving force in education as our system moves forward.
The governing body of our district is the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board, which is comprised of ten individuals who are dedicated to providing strong, progressive and responsible leadership. Each Board Member values our community, and knows and recognizes that the quality of life in our parish is directly proportional to the quality of education attained by our youth. Because of this basic philosophy, members of our Board are all clear thinkers and work for the long-term benefits that a school system brings to its community. Each Board Member brings unique strengths to the table, and collectively, they serve as an excellent group of policy makers for our citizens.
I am proud to work as Superintendent and I am fortunate, indeed, to lead a group of quality educators and support staff that are dedicated to the welfare of our children. If you are a West Baton Rouge resident, then you know that the "west side is the best side." If you are considering a move to our parish as a resident or an employee, we welcome you. Rest assured that your move will be positive, your presence will be valued, and your quality of life will improve!
