This evening marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Its name translates literally as ‘head of the year’ and the two-day celebration is a time for Jewish people to celebrate the creation of the world. Pomegranates are traditionally eaten at Rosh Hashanah as symbols of fruitfulness and wisdom as the seeds are said to represent the 613 commandments, or mitzvot, in the Torah. They are among the most recognizable and highly symbolic fruits in Jewish culture. This little pomegranate-shaped vase, excavated in Jerusalem, is just 8cm tall and was made around 750–587 BCE.
