Marie Van Brittan Brown was a nurse, her husband Albert L. Brown, an electronics technician. In 1966 they invented a closed-circuit television security system that spearheaded modern security systems. They were granted a patent in 1969.

Lloyd Augustus Hall was an American chemist, who contributed to the science of food preservation. By the end of his career, Hall had amassed 59 United States patents, and a number of his inventions were also patented in other countries.

Percy Julian was a chemist that made physostigmine readily available for the treatment of glaucoma (an eye disorder that can lead to blindness). He received over 130 chemical patients, and was the first African American inducted into the National Academy of Sciences.
