National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day takes place each year on February 15. The SRO assignment is unique within the law enforcement profession. These sworn law enforcement officers serve as informal mentors, law educators, and law enforcement officers to support the students and communities they serve. They are valuable and essential members of the education community who deserve unwavering respect and support from the public in the pursuit of keeping schools and students safe.

Madam C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur and Social Activist
Madam C.J. Walker invented a line of African American hair products after suffering from a scalp ailment. Her business acumen led her to be one of the 1st American woman to become a self-made millionaire. She was also known for philanthropic endeavors, including a donation toward the construction of a YMCA.

George Washington Carver: Agricultural Scientist and Inventor
George Washington Carver was a scientist and inventor famous for his work with the peanut; he invented more than 300 products involving the crop, including dyes, plastics, and gasoline, but not peanut butter.

Garrett Morgan: The Black Edison
Garrett Morgan created early versions of the traffic light and gas mask. He began as a sewing machine mechanic before patenting and improved sewing machine design and a hair-straightening product, among other inventions. His breathing device, known as a safety hood, later provided the blueprint for World War I gas masks. In 1923, Morgan invented a safer traffic light.

Celebrate Black History Month with PAE by learning about trailblazing African Americans with us! Stay tuned for a new post each day!
Also, students can wear Black History Free Dress (with uniform bottoms) each Monday in February. Some ideas include shirts that represent HBCUs, famous African Americans, fictional Black characters, or African countries.
